Ellen Strong, Juniors Coach
Ellenโs approach to coaching young adults is based on having fun, making friends, and improving fitness. She has been rowing since 2014, and coaching since 2015. She has coached many Juniors in both sweep and sculling. With her positive approach and encouragement, students will learn the skills to continue rowing for recreation or move to the competitive level.
Ellen brings many years of teaching children and young adults, preschool through high school, as a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Competitive Juniors FAQ
Why donโt we go on the water during the first week of practice?
Because at CIR, safety always comes first! You need a solid knowledge and safety base before going on the water. In order to prepare you for lake time, the first few practices teach you the basics: safety precautions, the boat care routine, the rowing stroke, rowing terminology, and coxswain commands. You will also watch a required Rowing Safety DVD and practice the stroke on dock rowers.
What should I wear once we are on the water?
Clothes: Spandex or athletic fit clothing works best! The snugger the clothing the better. Loose pants and shorts can get caught in the seat slides and loose tops can get caught on the oar handle. Bright colored clothing is also helpful as it allows the coaches to better see the rowers on the water. We row in all weather conditions except lightning and high wind, so be prepared with proper layers โ NO COTTON!
Shoes: We launch our boats from the water which means your feet get wet. Wear water shoes or shoes you donโt mind getting wet.
Extras: Water bottles and sunscreen are helpful, and a waterproof case for your cell phone if you just have to have it on the water. We have lost a good many cell phones to Dyes Inlet.
What forms/paperwork is needed to start the competitive team?
You will receive all the required information in an e-mail once you register, but it is necessary for your athlete to complete the online USRowing Waiver, Float Test, and Athlete Code of Conduct.

What happens if I canโt make a practice?
Talk to your coach prior to any planned absences, and let the coach know through e-mail or text message if you are sick or have an emergency. Too many absences will result in removal from racing line-ups.
What is Ellen Strongโs Coaching Philosophy?
The rowing experience for juniors should be around Fun, Friends and Fitness. I believe that all youth should have the opportunity to play a sport that provides them with a place to belong and be part of a team. I will give them the chance to have fun, learn, grow and become the person that they hope to be. I will be positive, approachable and consistent.
My legacy will be formed by my principles. I will live by my values and provide a positive experience for all rowers. My practice plans and objectives will be clearly defined. I will establish rules and help my rowers follow them. I will build and nurture relationships with rowers and other coaches. I will be organized. Whenever possible I will involve other coaches and volunteers to enhance the experience for rowers. And I will always keep the big picture in mind.
